The french word Papier-mâché – literally means chewed or mashed paper.
Made in 1914, Airfield’s ceiling uses paper material and plaster, stuck together with glue. The wet mixture was pressed into square moulds and left to harden. Today, visitors to Airfield’s Library are surprised to hear the ceiling is made of paper!
