Education
Airfield is a place of lifelong learning, and with the help of the Teaching Council, we’re spearheading discovery learning techniques that build knowledge at every level through workshops, discussion and interactive play.
We work with early childhood care, primary and secondary schools, as well as third level institutions across Ireland, to offer endless opportunities to find out more about food. Things like seasonality, growing and cooking, embracing sustainability and nature are all covered in our school courses and adapted to your class and their needs.
We also offer internships and summer DES teacher training courses, and for those who left the classroom some time ago – there are gardening, cookery and craft courses that move in time with the seasons and reflect the work we do on the estate every day.
PRE & PRIMARY SCHOOLS
Our child-centred primary education programme provides a wonderful opportunity for active, hands-on learning in a unique and relaxed environment that celebrates food, farming and the natural world. There is also a Montessori, The Little School set in the heart of the grounds of Airfield Estate.
Developed by educational professionals with years of experience, we’ve worked hard to include the Discover Science and Aistear elements into each programme.
Secondary Schools
Our secondary school programmes can be tailored to suit your group by our Education Team
As a working farm, Airfield Estate offers the opportunity for you and your students to experience farming as a system.
We’ve a wealth of choices for transition year students to get involved with food, farming and the land it comes from.
Observe our working and commercial farm where all crops, Jersey herd milk and animals on the estate are used for food production in our estate restaurant.
Colleges and Universities
Airfield Estate offers a number of experiences to interested parties from third level institutions. We can offer tours of the Estate tailored to the varying aspects of what we do (for example Sustainability tours, Culinary Experiences, Botanical tours as well as Engineering and Architecture).
We also offer a number of internship opportunities across every dept. on the estate throughout the year, so please do get in touch if you are interested in partaking in this programme.
How We Teach
-
Hands On
We believe that learning experiences are enhanced when students get their hands on what they’re learning about!
-
Discovery Learning
We use this teaching methodology as it enhances the learning process on the estate and increases retention of information
-
Interactive
Getting students involved with the food production system increases the likelihood that they will try new foods.
-
More than Science
Food education can help teach maths, science, geography, language and personal skills that support other learning outcomes.
-
